MAN OH MAN

Section 1 Image Something’s happening to newsstands around the state of Arizona and beyond … Our first-ever Men’s Issue of Desert Living is hitting and it’s not uncommon to see fights break out over the last copy or scalpers selling our mags in the Borders parking lot. Although this behavior seems appropriate for the Super Bowl/FBR crowd that’s rolling into town, you, dear locals, may be heading out of town to avoid the traffic. If you go to Vegas, celebrate the Men’s Issue by shopping at The Men’s Shop in The Mirage (702-792-7757). Carrying everything from Chip & Pepper, Diesel and James Perse to Gucci jewelry and Ritmo Mundo watches, The Men’s Shop at The Mirage will help you celebrate our new issue like a man.

ROLLOVER & PLAYDEAD

Section 2 Image If you actually take the advice above and skip town, spare Fido from the kennel and send him to Gofetch & Barkalott, a premium canine service that spoils your pooch in new and almost creepy ways. After an “introduction” in your own home, an excursion is scheduled and the “client” is picked up and transported to Mountain Preserves. A day’s itinerary includes hiking and walking complete with rest breaks for water, treats, a temperature and physical evaluation, lunch and downtime, and an afternoon of swimming and interacting with other four-legged friends at the 1,200-square-foot facility. Playtime is then followed by a light massage, and rinse and comb out. Yep, we said massage. Excursions: $85 per day, $400 for five days. Call 623-GO-FETCH or visit www.gofetchandbarkalott.com to book.

OPEN YOUR EYES

Section 3 Image

No matter where you are in Phoenix, you’re likely a hop-skip away from a great modernist building. We’ve got a lot of great architecture, it can just be hard to see it through the faux stone and stucco jungle. So let Gwendolyn Wright help you see. This professor at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University will explore the legacy of contemporary architecture in the Southwest on Thursday, January 31 at 7 pm at SMoCA. Her chat “ARTiculations: Excavating American Modern Architecture" will explore how the “Arizona School” of architects have adapted the rules of the European Modernism for our specific landscape, climate and culture. The lecture takes place in the Stage 2 Theater, $10 nonmembers; call 480-994-ARTS for tickets.
